ODT file won't open — what to check, and how to recover the text.
Your .odt won't open in LibreOffice or OpenOffice. Rule out the quick causes below, then upload the file and see the watermarked pages recovered from a rebuilt copy. A one-time $14 USD — and only if the repair works.

We couldn't recover this one.
The file is too damaged to rebuild, so there is nothing to preview and no charge.

Try a deep repair
The repair engine can try a longer pass on the file you already uploaded.
Machine-only processing; no human views files; nothing is sent to an outside AI.
Have another clip from the same device?
A healthy video recorded on the same device — ideally the same settings — gives the repair engine a template to rebuild from. It can unlock repairs that fail on their own.
Unrepaired files are kept encrypted for up to 30 days, then deleted.
FileFix can't fix that kind of file yet.
Right now we repair video, audio, document, and image files (MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, AVI, TS, MTS, M2TS, MPG, MPEG, VOB, 3GP, WebM, FLV, M4A, WAV, MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG, OPUS, AIFF, XLSX, DOCX, PPTX, ODT, ZIP, RAR, PDF, AI, HEIC, and HEIF). We're adding support for more formats over time.

Why this happens
Rule out the causes that are not damage first. A file still syncing from a cloud folder, a document open in another program or locked by a stale lock file, and a .ods or .odp renamed to .odt all produce a refusal that looks like corruption. If the file opens on another computer or from a fresh copy, it was never damaged.
If it fails everywhere, the package itself is damaged. An interrupted save, an incomplete copy, or a cut-off download can remove the ZIP index or leave content.xml ending mid-element, and LibreOffice then reports a read or format error instead of opening the text.
FileFix reads past that damage: it scans the ZIP records that survived, recovers the paragraphs it can parse from the document content, and writes a new valid .odt. The free preview is generated from that rebuilt file before you decide.
What we can and can't recover
We can usually fix
- Documents LibreOffice or OpenOffice reports as corrupted or refuses to open
- Documents cut off mid-save or mid-transfer
- Files that show the right size but won't open
We can't fix
- Password-protected/encrypted documents
- Genuinely empty (0-byte) files
- Deleted or formatted files (that's data recovery, a different job)
- OpenDocument spreadsheets (.ods) and presentations (.odp) — this repair is for .odt text documents
How it works
-
Upload Drop the file in. It uploads over an encrypted connection. The repair runs automatically — no person looks at your file.
-
Free watermarked preview The free watermarked preview shows one or two complete watermarked pages from the rebuilt document.
-
Pay & download If it shows what you need, unlock the repaired .odt for a one-time $14 USD.

Questions
Yes, on a copy. If LibreOffice's repair produces a usable document, you avoid an upload. If it fails or the result is empty, upload the original copy to FileFix.
Not necessarily. A blank result can mean the content XML could not be parsed, not that it is missing. The free preview tells you whether any paragraphs were recovered before you pay anything.
No. This repair handles .odt text documents only. OpenDocument spreadsheets and presentations are not processed by this engine.
