Why Word documents stop opening
A .docx document is a ZIP package. Its main text lives in word/document.xml, while relationships, styles, media, headers, and other features live in separate members. Word expects the package records and XML document body to be readable before it opens the file.
An interrupted save, incomplete copy, or damaged archive tail can remove the package index. The main document XML can also end abruptly, leaving an unfinished element. Word may reject the package even when paragraphs remain in the uploaded bytes.
FileFix scans the surviving local ZIP records, recovers the main document XML with a fault-tolerant parser, and writes a minimal valid .docx around the recovered body. It then opens that result with an independent document reader before creating the preview.
The preview shows only content present in the rebuilt document; it does not guarantee that missing source content, formatting, comments, tracked changes, headers, images, or other package features were recovered.
