Why this happens
A .docx is not one continuous stream of formatted text. It is a ZIP package whose main body, styles, relationships, and media are separate. Damage to the archive tail or an unfinished XML element can make the entire document fail to open.
FileFix scans the package members directly, recovers word/document.xml with a fault-tolerant parser, and writes a minimal .docx containing the recovered body and the records needed to open it. A document reader then checks the output and counts its paragraphs.
The rebuilt file prioritizes readable body text. The preview shows only content present in the rebuilt document; it does not guarantee that missing source content, formatting, comments, tracked changes, headers, images, or other package features were recovered.

The current DOCX rebuild is centered on recoverable word/document.xml and does not promise embedded media. Use the watermarked preview to evaluate text recovery, not photo recovery.
