FileFix

Old .doc won't open in new Word

An old .doc file that will not open in a new version of Word may simply use the legacy binary format, but a corrupt file is a different case. FileFix repairs the modern .docx format, not the legacy .doc binary — so save or convert the document to .docx first, in Word or any editor that can still read it. If the converted .docx is damaged or still will not open, upload that .docx to preview one or two complete watermarked pages from the rebuilt document before you decide. A one-time $14 — and only if the repair works.

Drop a broken Word document here — the free preview shows what's recoverable before you pay.

Good news — your file isn't damaged. No charge.

There's nothing to repair. If it still looks broken, the issue may be the player, codec, or viewer on your device rather than the file itself.

We couldn't recover this one.

The file is too damaged to rebuild, so there is nothing to preview and no charge.

Unrepaired files are kept encrypted for up to 30 days, then deleted.

FileFix can't fix that kind of file yet.

Right now we repair video, audio, document, and image files (MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, AVI, TS, MTS, M2TS, MPG, MPEG, VOB, 3GP, WebM, FLV, M4A, WAV, MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG, AIFF, XLSX, DOCX, PPTX, ODT, ZIP, PDF, AI, HEIC, and HEIF). We're adding support for more formats over time.

We store just your email and the file type — never the file itself. One message, when it's ready. No spam.

Why this happens

The .doc and .docx extensions identify different formats: .doc is Word's legacy binary document format, while .docx is a ZIP package containing XML parts. A newer Word version can normally open a valid .doc, so changing the extension does not convert or repair the file.

When other valid .doc files open but this one does not, the legacy document's container or internal records may be damaged. That corruption case is distinct from a format-compatibility problem and requires recovering readable content rather than renaming the file.

FileFix works on the .docx package, not the legacy .doc binary, so there is no .doc upload path today. When a converted or exported .docx will not open, FileFix scans the surviving package parts and rebuilds recoverable body text into a minimal .docx. The preview shows only content present in the rebuilt document; it does not guarantee that missing source content, formatting, comments, tracked changes, headers, images, or other package features were recovered. If no program can read the original .doc at all, there is nothing to convert and this repair cannot help.
