An old .doc file that will not open in a new version of Word may simply use the legacy binary format, but a corrupt file is a different case. Why this happens
The .doc and .docx extensions identify different Word file formats. A newer Word version can normally open a healthy .doc file. Renaming it to .docx does not convert or repair it.
If other .doc files open but this one does not, the file itself may be damaged. Changing its name will not bring back missing or unreadable content.
FileFix repairs .docx files and does not accept old .doc files. First save or convert the document to .docx in a program that can still read it. If that .docx will not open, FileFix can attempt to recover its text into a new document. The preview shows only content present in the rebuilt document; it does not guarantee that missing source content, formatting, comments, tracked changes, headers, images, or other document features were recovered. If no program can read the original .doc at all, there is nothing to convert and this repair cannot help.
