Why this happens

Acrobat's "file is damaged and could not be repaired" message means its parser could not build a consistent document from the objects and cross-reference information it found. It does not identify which bytes are damaged, and it does not prove that every page object is gone.

A stale startxref pointer, broken trailer, malformed object, or truncated tail can all lead to this message. FileFix tries recovery and rewrite paths outside Acrobat, then reopens each candidate without recovery mode to verify that it contains readable pages.

The selected candidate is the one with the highest validated page count, then object count. The summary reports those facts and a text excerpt when one can be extracted; it does not promise that every visual or interactive feature survived.

What we can and can't recover

We can usually fix

  • PDFs that show "the file is damaged and could not be repaired"
  • PDFs Chrome or Edge won't open ("Failed to load PDF document")
  • Files cut off mid-download or mid-save
  • PDFs with a broken cross-reference table or trailer

We can't fix

  • Password-protected or encrypted PDFs
  • Genuinely empty (0-byte) files
  • Deleted or formatted files (that's data recovery, a different job)
  • Pages whose content was never written to disk
