FileFix

OBS recording plays audio but no video — here's what to do.

An OBS file that plays sound but shows no picture can mean two very different things — and only one is fixable. Upload it for a free check and we'll tell you honestly which one you have before you pay anything.

Drop a broken video file here — the free preview shows what's recoverable before you pay.

Good news — your file isn't damaged. No charge.

There's nothing to repair. If it still looks broken, the issue may be the player, codec, or viewer on your device rather than the file itself.

We couldn't recover this one.

The file is too damaged to rebuild, so there is nothing to preview and no charge.

Unrepaired files are kept encrypted for up to 30 days, then deleted.

FileFix can't fix that kind of file yet.

Right now we repair video, audio, document, and image files (MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, AVI, TS, MTS, M2TS, MPG, MPEG, VOB, 3GP, WebM, FLV, M4A, WAV, MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG, AIFF, XLSX, DOCX, PPTX, ODT, ZIP, PDF, AI, HEIC, and HEIF). We're adding support for more formats over time.

We store just your email and the file type — never the file itself. One message, when it's ready. No spam.

Two reasons OBS gives you audio but no video

The good case: the video track is present but the file's index or container is damaged, so a player reads the audio but stumbles on the picture. This happens after a crash or an unclean stop, and it's usually recoverable — we rebuild the container so the video plays again.

The other case: OBS recorded no video at all. If a scene had no video source added, a game-capture hook silently failed, or a black-screen/permissions issue meant nothing was ever captured, the file only ever contained audio. There's no picture hidden inside to recover — nothing can add footage that was never recorded.

These look identical when you play the file, which is why guessing wastes money. FileFix inspects the file and tells you which case you're in for free: if there's real video to recover, you'll see it in a watermarked preview and pay only if it looks right; if the file genuinely has no video track, we say so plainly and there's nothing to charge for.

If it turns out no video was captured, the fix is on the OBS side for next time — confirm a video source is added to the scene and that game/display capture is actually showing a picture in the preview before you record.

What we can and can't fix

We can usually fix

  • The video track is there but the container or index is damaged, so only the audio plays — we rebuild it and the picture comes back.

We can't fix

  • OBS never captured any video (no source, failed capture hook, black screen) — there's no picture in the file to recover. More on that →

How it works

  1. Upload Drop a supported video file in. It uploads over an encrypted connection. The repair runs automatically — no person watches your file.
