Why MP4 files get corrupted

Phones, cameras, drones, GoPros, screen recorders, and editing apps write MP4. Most "corrupted MP4" problems are not damage to the footage itself. They're damage to the structure of the file: the part that tells a player where the footage is and how to read it. That structure can be broken or missing after an interrupted recording, a failed transfer, an app crash, or a card removed too soon.

When that happens, the player can't make sense of the file and shows an error or a black frame — even though the footage inside is often intact. What it can't do is invent footage that was never recorded — a genuinely empty file has nothing to rebuild.
