Why a .dav file won't play in a normal player
Dahua cameras and NVRs (and the many brands built on Dahua hardware) save recordings as .dav — a proprietary container that standard players like VLC, QuickTime, and Windows Media Player don't understand. So a perfectly healthy .dav still "won't play" on a regular computer.
That means most .dav problems aren't corruption — they're a format issue. The free, correct fix is Dahua's own SmartPlayer (or the DSS/config tool), which opens the .dav and exports it as a standard MP4 you can play and share anywhere. We'd always rather you convert it for free than pay us for a file that isn't broken.
FileFix helps in the narrower case where the .dav is actually damaged: the clip was copied off the NVR or a USB stick mid-write, the drive filled up, or the recording was cut off — so Dahua's own converter errors out or the resulting MP4 won't play. That's ordinary truncation, and rebuilding a playable file from what survived is what we do.
