FileFix

Fix CCTV or DVR footage that won't play on your PC.

Security-camera footage that plays on the recorder but not on your computer is almost always one of two things: a codec/container mismatch (the file's fine, it just needs re-packaging) or a truncated export (the copy was cut off). Upload it and we'll work out which and fix what's fixable.

You preview before you pay. If the download is materially worse than the preview you approved, we'll refund you.

Good news — your file isn't damaged. No charge.

There's nothing to repair. If it still looks broken, the issue may be the player, codec, or viewer on your device rather than the file itself.

We couldn't recover this one.

The file is too damaged to rebuild, so there is nothing to preview and no charge.

Unrepaired files are kept encrypted for up to 30 days, then deleted.

FileFix can't fix that kind of file yet.

Right now we repair video, audio, document, and image files (MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, AVI, TS, MTS, M2TS, MPG, MPEG, VOB, 3GP, WebM, FLV, M4A, WAV, MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG, AIFF, XLSX, DOCX, PPTX, ODT, ZIP, PDF, AI, HEIC, and HEIF). We're adding support for more formats over time.

We store just your email and the file type — never the file itself. One message, when it's ready. No spam.

Why CCTV and DVR footage won't play on a computer

Security recorders — DVRs and NVRs from every brand — are built to record efficiently and play back on their own hardware or software, not on a general-purpose computer. So when you move a clip to a PC, two things commonly go wrong, and they need different fixes.

First, a codec or container mismatch. The footage is completely intact, but it's wrapped in a proprietary container or uses a vendor codec (like H.265 or a "smart" variant) that VLC and Windows can't read. The result is a black screen, audio-only, or an error — on a file that's actually healthy. Re-packaging or converting it into a standard MP4 makes it play everywhere, with no quality loss.

Second, a truncated export. The clip was copied to a USB stick or exported over the network and the transfer was interrupted, or the drive filled up. Now the file has footage but is missing its end and its index, so nothing opens it. This one is a genuine repair — rebuilding a playable file around the footage that survived.

FileFix handles both, and the free check tells you which case you have before you spend anything. If your brand has a dedicated page — Reolink, Hikvision, Dahua, Swann — start there for the specifics; otherwise upload here and we'll take it from your file. If the export is empty, we say so plainly and don't charge.

What we can and can't fix

We can usually fix

  • The footage is healthy but unplayable off-device due to a proprietary container or codec, or the export was truncated mid-copy — we convert or rebuild it into a file that plays anywhere.

We can't fix

  • The file is 0 bytes or the export captured no footage — there's nothing to convert or rebuild. More on that →
