Why NVR exports won't play on a computer
Network video recorders from Lorex, Amcrest, Uniview, and the many brands built on shared hardware all behave alike: they record efficient H.264/H.265 into their own container, tuned for playback on the recorder or in the vendor's app. Move a clip to a computer and standard players frequently can't read it — a black screen, audio-only, or an outright error on footage that's perfectly intact.
When that's the problem, it's a container or codec mismatch, not damage. Re-packaging the healthy stream into a standard MP4 — or converting a proprietary codec — makes it play in VLC and any normal player, without re-encoding or losing quality.
The second failure is a truncated export. You pulled a backup to a USB drive or over the network and the transfer was interrupted, or the disk filled up mid-write. The footage is partly there, but the file is missing its end and index, so nothing opens it until it's rebuilt.
