Why Swann DVR footage won't play off-device
Swann DVRs save footage in their own container and codec setup, meant to be viewed on the recorder or in Swann's own software. When you export a clip to a USB stick and try to open it on a computer, standard players often can't read that packaging — you get a black screen, audio-only, or an error, even though the footage is fine.
In these cases the footage isn't corrupt — it's a container mismatch. Re-packaging the stream into a standard MP4 makes it play in VLC, Windows, and everywhere else, with no re-encoding and no quality loss. That's the most common Swann fix.
The other case is a genuinely broken export: the USB copy was interrupted, the stick was pulled early, or the drive filled up, leaving a truncated file that's missing its end and index. Then nothing will open it until the file is rebuilt around the footage that made it across.
